  “What does he want?”

“He wants me to sign papers saying that I will never ask him for any money. For me or for you.”

A little crease appeared in his brow. “So?”

She stared at him. She couldn’t expect him to understand. She probably shouldn’t have said anything.

He turned to Eddie. “That’s not a problem, is it? We live here with you now.” He turned back to April with a reassuring smile. “Eddie’s going to take care of us now.”

She didn’t know what to say. She didn’t want to put Eddie under that kind of pressure, and she wouldn’t want to depend on him financially, even if she had to! She’d learned her lesson. She was going to stand on her own two feet. She’d like to stand beside Eddie, she wasn’t denying that, but no way did she want to lean on him financially. She was leaning on his support emotionally, and that was more than enough. She shook her head. “I’m taking care of us now. Eddie doesn’t have to, and besides it’s not like it was with your dad. He has lots and lots of money, not because he earned it, but because his family has always had it. It’s not like that for Eddie. He has to work very hard for his money; we’re not going to ask him to spend it on us, okay?”

  Marcus nodded.

Perhaps she’d been a little sharp with him. She hadn’t meant to, but she didn’t want him assuming and she didn’t want Eddie to feel they were going to be a burden. She looked at him. He wasn’t smiling. Oh no, had they managed to freak him out? He did look uncomfortable. She sighed. This hadn’t turned out how she’d hoped at all.

Marcus picked up his plate and Eddie’s. “I’m going to wash my hands.”

She rolled her eyes at Eddie once he’d gone. “I well and truly messed that up, didn’t I?”

  Eddie shrugged. “He’ll be fine.”

“And now you’re not happy with me either, are you?”

  He shrugged again.

“What? What did I do wrong? I just didn’t want you to feel under any pressure. I didn’t want you thinking that Marcus is getting too dependent on you—or that I am!”

“I know. Relax. I’m not mad at you. If anything, I’m mad at me.”

“What for?” Was he about to say he was mad at himself for getting involved with them in the first place? Was he mad at himself for letting his life get this complicated with a not yet divorced woman and her kid? She stared at him, wondering what he was about to say.

“I’m mad at myself for not saying anything sooner. It just never came up. I never think about it.”

“What?” She had no clue what he was talking about, but she wished he’d hurry up and explain.

“You said it isn’t the same for me as it is for Guy.” He sucked in a deep breath before he continued. “As a matter of fact, it is.”

  “What…what do you mean?”

“I mean, I don’t have to work for every penny I get. I don’t have to work at all if I don’t want to. I don’t have money because I earned it. How much do you think a jobbing musician makes in a year? I have money because my dad made it all.”

“I…I don’t understand.” She couldn’t process what he was saying.

He shrugged. “I’m a trust fund kid. Maybe not in the standard sense. I didn’t know about it until a couple of years ago. I told you my dad left, and my stepdad raised me, or at least he was the one around when I was growing up. Well, I started looking for my dad a few years ago. And when I found him, he told me he’d set up a trust fund for me, in case I ever had the balls to come find him. He’s not proud of the way he was when I was small, and he’s not proud of walking out on us. He’s trying to make up for it financially.” He gave her a knowing look. “But as we both know, money doesn’t mean much compared to other things.”

April sat down in Marcus’s seat and stared at him. “So, you’re not…” She didn’t know how to say it. She wasn’t even sure what she meant. The thought that kept running through her mind was that he—wasn’t Eddie! He was someone else. Some rich kid playing at real life. She shook her head. “I don’t know what to say.”

“It doesn’t make any difference, does it? I didn’t say anything because it doesn’t make any difference to me. I’m still me. It’s just that for the last few years I’ve been me with a big bank account, which makes life a bit easier.”

“I’ll have to take your word for that. I wouldn’t know.”

He brought his hand up to rub the side of his head. “It doesn’t matter to you, does it?”

“I don’t know. I just feel like you’re not who I thought you were.”

“That’s crazy. Of course, I am. I’m still me. Nothing’s changed.”

She nodded. He was right, of course. “I’m sorry. I’m just surprised.”

He reached for her hand across the table. For all her confusion, she knew she wanted to hold onto him, feel close to him.

“Can you stand another surprise?” he asked. “I figure I may as well get it all out there while I’m on a roll.”

She gave him a weak smile. “I think so, but don’t be surprised if I fall off my chair, will you? I’m not sure how much more I can take!”

He smiled. “There is one more thing I need to tell you. It’s even bigger and more important, at least it is to me.”

She waited, wondering what on earth might be coming next.

He squeezed her hand and looked deep into her eyes. “I love you, April.”

She gasped. Whatever she might have expected, it wasn’t that! She squeezed his hand right back. “You do?”

  He nodded. “I do.”

  “I love you, Eddie!”

He shook his head. “You don’t have to say it back; I just wanted you to know. You’ve got so much else on your plate right now. I know it’s not the same for you, but…” He was babbling.

“I love you, Eddie,” she repeated slowly, hoping he’d hear her.

He closed his mouth and stared at her for a long moment. “For real?” he asked eventually.

  She nodded. “For real.”

His smile was huge. “Then everything’s going to be okay. I love you, and you love me, and that’s all we need. We can work the rest out as we go!”

  She nodded. She hoped so.

“And I love you both, too!”

She turned to see Marcus standing there with a big grin on his face. He nodded at her. “Didn’t I tell you, Eddie’s going to take care of us now?”

She nodded back. She’d let him love them; she knew that much. As he’d said himself, they could work the rest out as they went.

  Chapter Fifteen

April came and sat beside him on the sofa once she’d checked on Marcus. “He’s fast asleep already,” she said. “He was chattering away about how much he loves playing the drums and how awesome you are and what a great time the two of you had, and then bam! His eyes closed and he zonked out.”

Eddie smiled. “I’ll bet he’s worn out. You really don’t need to take him over to Doc and Lizzie in the morning. Let him sleep in. I’ll get him up and on the bus.”

She looked uncertain, and he knew why. He was asking her to take another step toward letting him all the way into their life. “The bus wouldn’t know to stop here for him. It dropped him off today because I talked to the driver yesterday.”

“I bet they wouldn’t drive on by if we’re stood there waiting, and if it comes to it, I can always drive him.”

  She nodded.

It was important to him that she should say yes. It’d mean something. Something big. She nodded slowly. “It’d do him good to get some more sleep, and I’m opening up tomorrow.”

“It’s decided, then,” he said with a grin. “And since you’re on an early early we should probably get you to bed, too.” He couldn’t wait any longer. He’d been so good. He hadn’t done anything about his growing desire for her. He’d slept next to her for a week now, and he hadn’t touched her, at least not like that. He’d held her, but that was all.

She met his gaze. “I’d like that.”

She felt it, too. He could tell by the way she said it. It was time. He’d never have dreamed that he’d tell a woman he loved her before he had sex with her! He got up from the sofa and led her to the bedroom. When they got there, he closed the door behind them and backed her up against it. He had to take it slow. He had to make it special.

Her arms came up around his neck, and he covered her mouth with his own. She tasted so sweet as she opened up to him. Her hot, wet mouth made him imagine where else she’d feel hot and wet. He moaned into her mouth as the blood surged through his veins. She grasped his shoulders and rubbed her hips against his. She was driving him crazy.

He slid his hands down and filled them with her perfect little ass as he ground his hips against her. A little whimper escaped her lips as she kissed him hungrily. He pulled away and led her to the bed, where he sat down and brought her to stand in front of him. She was wearing a simple dress that buttoned down the front. He started at the top and worked his way down. His fingers were trembling by the time he reached the bottom one. Her hands were gripping his shoulders, and the dress hung open, exposing her slender figure. He reached up to push it off her shoulders, so she stood before him in just her bra and panties. Damn, she was beautiful. He took hold of her hips and pulled her closer so he could trail his tongue over her belly. She tasted just as sweet as he’d imagined all this time. The moan that escaped her lips sounded sweet, too. He reached around with one hand and unclasped her bra. His cock strained in his pants as he got rid of the bra and cupped her breasts. They were perfect. He had to taste them. Her fingernails dug into his shoulders as he flicked her nipple with his tongue. He loved the way it stiffened to a peak. He turned his attention to the other, licking and sucking as she moaned. While his mouth was busy, he used his hands to get rid of his shirt and then push his jeans down and off.

Her gaze dropped to his briefs. There was no hiding his desire for her this time. He pushed them down and off and met her gaze; he needed to see her face, see her reaction to him. It was so much better than he’d hoped. A small smile spread across her face, and her tongue darted out to moisten her lips. She liked what she saw. She wanted him. That was what he’d needed to know. He’d waited this long because he hadn’t been sure. Hadn’t been sure about her, or about nice girls. She was a nice girl, no question about it. He’d never been with one of those before. The girls he slept with knew what they were doing. They knew what they wanted, and they knew how to get it. It was all a game to them—and to him.

April wasn’t like that, and he’d known it since he first met her. He wasn’t sure what to do with a nice girl, wasn’t sure what she’d like. Her face told him she liked what she saw. And this was no game. To him or to her. When she looked down into his eyes, what he saw and what he felt was more serious than anything he’d ever known. This was it. He was hers. He was about to make her his, and as far as he was concerned, his days of playing were over.

She smiled and moved to sit on the bed beside him. He wondered what she was going to do.

“I just can’t stand there anymore,” she said. “My legs are trembling. I want you so badly, Eddie. Make love to me.”

Her wish was his command. But he still wasn’t going to rush. He put a hand on her shoulder and gently pushed her back on the bed. Her eyes were big, nervous but trusting as she looked up at him. He nodded and slipped down off the bed to kneel before her. He hooked his fingers inside her panties and slowly slid them down over her hips. He couldn’t wait; he dipped his head to taste her. She gasped and her fingers tangled in his hair.

  “Eddie!” she gasped.

“Just lie back and relax, April. You’re going to love this. I promise.”

She lifted her head and met his gaze. “I love you, I promise.”

“And I promise I’ll always love you.” He didn’t want to see the questions in her eyes. He wanted her to know, so he slid her panties all the way off and set about proving it to her.

April lay back and closed her eyes. She couldn’t believe this was happening. This wonderful, sweet, caring man loved her. He’d told her with his eyes and with his words, and now he was telling her with his body. She gasped as he nibbled his way up her inner thigh. She knew where he was heading. She clung to his shoulders as his tongue slid between her lips. She wanted to scream; it felt so good. She thought she’d have to scream when one of his hands slid its way up, over her belly, over her rib cage and then stopped when his fingertips were tormenting her nipple. Electric currents zipped back and forth between her breasts and his tongue which was trailing up and down over her opening. Her whole body was quivering with anticipation, knowing that at any second his tongue would slip inside her. She tangled her fingers in his hair, needing something to hold onto when that moment came.

  It didn’t.

He took her completely by surprise when his lips closed around her clit, and he began to suck. She thought she might pass out from the intense pleasure that rolled through her. She was on the very edge, and there was no going back. His hand left her breasts and found its way between her legs. Oh no! He rested two fingers at her entrance and pushed gently with each suck. She was going to come; she knew it. She couldn’t hold back. Then he thrust his fingers deep inside her, and she lost all control. She could feel herself tightening around him over and over again. He didn’t let up; he worked his fingers in and out as she gasped and writhed. His tongue lapped at her, adding to the intensity as she breathed his name over and over again. “Eddie. Eddie! Eddeeee!” She couldn’t keep it in. She screamed as her orgasm tore through her.

Finally, she lay still, his fingers at rest inside her. He crooked them, and an aftershock sent shudders through her. The weird thing was she felt completely at his mercy, and she loved it. It was a new feeling for her, but she wasn’t going to let her mind stray back to what she was used to. She didn’t want that cloud darkening anything about this night with Eddie. This was her new life, her new man, her new love. It was all so different now, and she wasn’t going to let even a memory of Guy cast a shadow over any of it.

  Eddie smiled down at her.

  She smiled back.

“I love you,” he said. She knew he meant it.

“Then make love to me. That was amazing, but now I want you.” She reached out and gently touched his shaft. It was so hot and hard. He’d made her feel so good, but she didn’t want to make him wait any more. “I need you, inside me.”

He didn’t need telling twice. He was up on the bed beside her and reaching for a condom from the bedside drawer. She watched him roll it on. She wanted to do it for him, but she was too shy to offer. She’d get there, with time. This was just the beginning for them.

Eddie lay down on his back and drew her on top of him. She shook her head. She didn’t know what to do up there. She wanted to feel him on top of her, wanted his body to cover her own. For all she’d been through in her marriage, she still wanted her man to take her, not to make her take him. She didn’t want to be the scared little woman, but she did want Eddie to be in charge—in bed at least.

It seemed he understood as he smiled and rolled over. He slid his arm around her and drew her under him. Oh, yes! This was what she needed from him. He ran his fingers down between her breasts, then came back up to circle her nipple. He caught it between his finger and thumb and squeezed just hard enough to make her gasp.

She reached for him and watched his jawline set as she began to stroke him. He held her gaze and removed her hand, pinning it on the pillow above her head as he positioned himself above her. Her breath was coming slow and shallow as he spread her legs. This was it; he was finally going to make love to her.

She writhed underneath him, wanting him to make the move, needing him to thrust his hips.

“I’m going to make you mine,” he breathed.

  “I am yours,” she whispered.

He nodded as he lowered his weight onto her. His cock felt so big and hot as it pushed between her legs. She moaned as it press
ed at her entrance. For a moment she tensed, afraid that he might hurt her, that he might be too big. At that moment he thrust his hips, and his breath hissed out between his clenched teeth.

  “Oh God, April!”

“Eddie!” she gasped. He was stretching her, filling her, sending waves of pleasure crashing through her from the place where they connected.

“I love you,” he breathed as he started to move.

All she could do was hold on. He started out slow and gentle; it was exquisite torture to feel him move inside her, to move with him and become one with him.

She was losing it, and there was nothing she could do. He slid his hands underneath her, grasping her ass and holding her wide open as he picked up his pace. He was pounding into her; he was truly making her his. An image of a wild stallion floated across her mind and the thought it brought with it took her over the edge—he was fucking her. Hard!—and she was loving every second of it!

Her orgasm took her, and it felt as though every nerve ending in her body was exploding in a little ball of pleasure and all of them met and merged and became one. She worried that she was leaving Eddie behind, but she needn’t have. As her inner muscles clenched around him, she felt him tense and on his next deep thrust he found his release. Their bodies melded into one as the waves of pleasure crashed through them. His hips bucked wildly, and she clung on for the ride.

When they finally lay still, he lifted his head to smile down at her.

His eyes were so beautiful; his face was so beautiful. He was gorgeous. He was amazing! And he loved her!

  “You’re mine,” he breathed.

She nodded. She was, and she loved it. It didn’t scare her, not like in the past. Guy had told her she was his, but he meant it like a possession or an animal. Eddie didn’t mean it like that. Eddie loved her, and she loved him.

  “And you’re mine,” she smiled.

The next morning Eddie smiled at Marcus across the breakfast table. April had gone to work hours ago. The kid had been thrilled when Eddie woke him up, and he certainly seemed perky this morning. A couple of extra hours sleep would do that for a guy!
